Colts Healthy and Anxious to Open Postseason, Dungy Says
INDIANAPOLIS – After a week of work, Tony Dungy likes what he sees.

Twelve days have passed since the Colts played. Twenty-six days have passed since they clinched the AFC South title and the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs, so it has been nearly a month since they have played a game with postseason implications.

Now, two days remain before the postseason.

And as far as the Colts’ head coach sees it, the Colts are ready.

“I think our guys are anxious to play,” Dungy said as the AFC South Champion Colts (13-3) prepared to play the AFC West Champion San Diego Chargers (12-5) in an AFC Divisional Playoff game at the RCA Dome Sunday at 1 p.m.

Dungy, speaking at his weekly Friday morning media briefing, said the Colts would work Friday afternoon on short-yardage and goal-line, having not been as sharp in that area the day before as he wanted.

“Other than that, I think it has been a good week of practice,” Dungy said. “I’m fired up about playing.”

Dungy also said the uncertain status of Chargers tight end Antonio Gates has made preparing for San Diego more difficult than normal.

Gates, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who caught 75 passes for 984 yards and nine touchdowns this season, did not practice Wednesday or Thursday because of a toe injury.

“That has been tough on us,” Dungy said. “Obviously, they do quite a few things to take advantage of him. He’s an integral part of everything they do if he’s there. If he’s not there, we really don’t know what they’re going to feature.

“We worked on some different things. We have to go in assuming he’s going to play and go from there.”

Also on Friday, the Colts released their third injury report of the week, with no players listed as not participating in practice. Dungy has said throughout the week the Colts are as healthy as they have been in some time.

Cornerback T.J. Rushing, who missed practice with an illness Wednesday, is listed as probable, and tight end Ben Utecht – who practiced all week with a shoulder injury – is listed as questionable.

Wide receiver Marvin Harrison, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection who missed the last 10 games of the season with a knee injury, practiced every day and is not listed on the injury report.

“I wouldn’t say, ‘Definitely,’ but all indications are he’s going to be ready to go,” Dungy said of Harrison. “He has done fine. He has run all of his routes. He’s actually taken more reps than we had scheduled for him so that’s a good sign.”

Also on Friday, Dungy discussed the Colts’ 23-21 loss to the Chargers in November, a game in which the Colts committed six turnovers.

Dungy said while he doesn’t believe the Colts will commit another six turnovers Sunday, he said creating interceptions and fumbles is the Chargers’ style. The Chargers led the NFL this season with 48 turnovers and a plus-22 turnover margin,

“A lot of those were forced errors,” Dungy said. “They weren’t unforced errors. They were errors created by their talent level. That’s one thing they do. They put a lot of pressure on you to be sharp because they have good rushers who can take advantage of things. They have players in the secondary. They have a great return man, all of those things.”
